The council meeting to elect the chairman of the Weligama Pradeshiya Sabha will be held today. It will be chaired by the Southern Provincial Local Government Commissioner.
However, the National People's Power (NPP) is alleging that two councillors of the said Pradeshiya Sabha have been kidnapped before the election. There are also allegations that the person nominated by the Samagi Jana Balawegaya for the post of chairman of the said council is a person with underworld connections.
A situation has arisen where it is impossible to hold the council and it has been proposed that the council's business will commence if the two councillors concerned arrive.
